The two men became friends, and CD visited him in Scotland in 1841. CD named his third son after Jeffrey, and dedicated The Cricket on the Hearth to him. There is a chapter on Jeffrey in ]. W. T. Ley's The Dickens Circle (1918). jERDAN, WILLIAM. As editor of the Literary Gazette he published (in June I836) one of the earliest criticisms of PP, which had at that time reached only the fourth number and was still little known, and wrote to CD urging him to develop the character of Sam Weller 'to the utmost'.
He painted a portrait of CD in 1859· GASKELL, MRs ELIZABETH CLEGHORN (I 8 10-65), novelist, made important contributions to HW and A YR. CD much admired her first novel, Mary Barton (I848), and met her in 1849. On 31 January I85o he wrote inviting her to contribute 'a short tale, or any number of tales' to HW. ') The result was 'Lizzie Leigh', serialized in the first three numbers of the newly established magazine. Cranford appeared in eight parts published at irregular intervals (I851-3), and her 'industrial novel' North and South was serialized in 1854-5, immediately following CD's own exercise in the same sub-genre, HT.
